Conversational Mandarin Chinese Course

This eight-week course is offered for students at the beginning stage of their Mandarin Chinese study, with a focus on practical speaking skills, everyday vocabulary, and handy expressions that learners can start using from day one.

By the end of the course, students will be proficient in simple Chinese greetings and polite phrases, and able to engage in simple conversation on common topics such as occupation, nationality, dining, family, etc.

No previous experience with Mandarin Chinese is required.

 

Instructors

Qingyan (Vivian) Li

Born in Tianjin, China, Vivian (Qingyan) Li holds a Ph.D. from Sun Yat-sen University and an M.S. degree from South China Agricultural University, both in Botany, as well as an A.S. degree in Gemology from Peking University.  From 2008 to 2009 she was a Visiting Scholar at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Vivian formerly served as a teacher of spoken and written Mandarin Chinese at the Andover Chinese School in Andover, Massachusetts and the Derry Chinese School in Derry, New Hampshire.

 

Jonathan Reilly

Born in Boston and raised in Andover, Massachusetts, Jonathan Reilly holds a Ph.D. in political science and a Master’s degree in International Affairs, both from the University of Pittsburgh, and a Bachelor’s degree in East Asian Studies from the College of William and Mary.

Jonathan Reilly has fifteen years of teaching experience, in the United States, Mainland China, and Hong Kong.  He is an adjunct professor of courses in American constitutional law, Asian history and political science at Nashua Community College and formerly served as an adjunct instructor of political science courses at the University of Pittsburgh.  Jonathan is also an experienced language (Mandarin Chinese, ESL) and test-preparation (SAT, PSAT, GRE, TOEFL) tutor. Jonathan is fluent in both spoken and written Mandarin and Cantonese, with over eight years’ experience living and working in the People’s Republic of China.

 

Cost

$450 includes eight hours of instruction and relevant course materials (handouts, MP3 audio lessons and videos).
